ABOUT

HeatherPattersonImages-92.jpg

Welcome!

My name is Heather and I am a mom of two teens, a documentary photographer, author, and emergency physician in Calgary, Alberta.  It is a privilege to have these different roles, each anchored in my core values of kindness, curiosity, and authenticity.   Whether at home, working in the emergency department, photographing in homes or hospitals, I am inspired by by finding beauty in daily life, celebrating our communities, our successes, and validating the challenges we face.

As a mom, I know how real life looks and feels.  It is certainly not all pretty!  There are many stages as we grow our families and our relationships, and sometimes the seemingly small moments hold such value and nostalgia in the future.  Looking through the photos of my children, some of my most treasured photographs are of things that no longer exist marking the passage of childhood – kids being carried when too tired to walk, the terrible table manners, the dress up costumes scattered throughout the basement.  These moments bring me joy and laughter with a touch a sadness that the time has passed.  I love capturing important moments for other families.

During the COVID pandemic I had the privilege of documenting staff and patient experiences in the hospital, leading to multiple national media appearances, and publication of the book Shadows and Light: A Physician’s Lens on COVID.  I have spoken nationally to the medical community about the importance of cohesive team dynamics and addressing burnout and career longevity.  I continue to photograph in diverse surgical and medical environments.

So this is me!  I would love to hear from you and have the chance to create meaningful photographs with you!
